How to Locate and Utilize Copper In Minecraft

Minecraft Copper is a metal resource that was added in the 1.17 update, and you'll have to melt it into its ore form in order to create usable Copper ingots to make. Based on your Y-level, Copper ore is actually quite common and you'll be able to see pieces of green and orange popping out of stony blocks of ore. However, there are a few cautions to be aware of when you mine, melt or craft with Copper most notably, it oxidizes and develops to a blueish-green color. You will need to hunt for Copper if you want to create a Spyglass or Lightning Rod. We have covered everything you need to be aware of about Minecraft Copper. This includes where to mine it, how to obtain Copper Ingots and how to wax Copper.

How to Find Copper in Minecraft

You might want some Minecraft Amethyst Shards with your copper to make an Spyglass

Copper Ore is required to make Minecraft Copper Ingots. This resource spawns in the form of a Copper vein, meaning that you will typically find a number of Copper ore blocks clustered together. Bring Stone Pickaxes or a higher quality pickaxe along with you to avoid a snag, since Copper Ore mined with a wood pickaxe or other item won't drop anything.

Copper Ore spawns from Y-level 0 up to 96, with the highest chance of spawning in the middle layers - around Y48. It's therefore wise to start looking for copper a little lower than sea level (Y63). If it appears between layers Y0 and Y16, the Copper ore will be in the form of Deepslate Copper Ore. The latter has a higher level of hardness than normal Copper Ore and takes longer to mine. As it's also quite uncommon, it's best to go with the regular Copper Ore type. Copper ore is also found in large veins in Dripstone cave biomes.

However, mining Copper Ore will only get you Raw Copper. To make Minecraft Copper Ingots, you'll need to melt the raw material. It's a relatively easy step which most Minecraft players will already be familiar with: just put the Raw Copper in a furnace and add some fuel (wood is sufficient). Make sure that your Copper Ingots are made. Now you can begin crafting!

How to use copper in Minecraft

Now that you have your Copper Ingots, it is time to get started making. These items can be made using Copper Ingots

Spyglass. To create a Spyglass put one Amethyst Shard over two Copper Ingots.

How to wax Copper in Minecraft

Minecraft copper's color changes with oxidation exactly like in real life. You can see the different stages of Copper Oxidation in Minecraft in the above photo. You can apply wax to your copper if you don't want it to change. This will keep its current color and not reset it. You just need to equip a honeycomb, and use it on the copper block.

Alternately, you could scrape the Copper block using an axe. This will decrease the degree of oxidation by one (weathered copper will be exposed copper). A lightning strike, even though you cannot anticipate it, will erase any oxidation.
